NOUN

The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes
Early 17th century: from Greek tekhnologia ‘systematic treatment’, from tekhnÄ“ ‘art, craft’ + -logia (see -logy).

[ Atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide can be lowered either by reducing emissions or by taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and storing in terrestrial, oceanic, or freshwater aquatic ecosystems. A sink is defined as a process or an activity that removes greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. The long-term conversion of grassland and forestland to cropland (and grazing lands) has resulted in historic losses of soil carbon worldwide but there is a major potential for increasing soil carbon through restoration of degraded soils and widespread adoption of soil conservation practices.]

When people think ‘carbon’ they usually think ‘trees’, but in reality, 82% of carbon in the terrestrial biosphere is in the soil. Healthy grasslands may contain over 100 times more carbon in the soil than on it. When applied to farmlands whose nutrients have been depleted from the overuse of chemical fertilizers, a single ton of vermicompost can sequester up to .24 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

ACT for Earth - Mission Statement
Incorporate vermiculture into civic, school & home life.

Contribute to improved health outcomes and well-being of local people

Demonstrate ACT (Active Compost Technology) as an effective technology to sequester carbon in the soil

Convert organic waste into fertilizer using Vermiculture (the cultivation of specific worms)

Save water, energy, landfill and rebuild and remineralize the soil.

Meet the ACT team
Steven Snape (pictured with his oldest son Seth & dog Doodle)is a former member of the British  Army and has been informally studying vermiculture for a number of years. Steven has been an organic farmer for the last 10 years.

Maria Campbell is a fully qualified and experienced Naturopathic Nutritionist who currently delivers sessions for ONE planet, delivers and teaches workshops on Nutrition and has her own client base.

Kerry Gormley is a founder and the current manager of ONE planet Accrington, East Lancashire's first community-owned, cooperatively run shop. She has a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) from the Permaculture Association and is an active campaigner for environmental justice.
